This study discusses the importance of collection development in libraries. Various factors have to be taken into consideration while developing a qualitative collection for the benefit of the users. These factors include policies, principles, techniques and procedures, problems associated with collection development. It is equally important to evaluate the collections to assess its use and moreover the usefulness of collection development in electronic environment. Academic libraries which are considered to be nerve centers of academic and research activities must help achieve the academic goals of their parent institutions and this is possible only through developing adequate library collection. Collection development is one of the important and challenging library management activities. Collection development is a process of selecting, ordering and payment of information materials for the use of the users in the library.
